Mindful Breathing in Your Yoga Practice

One of the fundamental aspects of a yoga practice is mindful breathing, also known as pranayama. Mindful breathing plays a crucial role in connecting the mind and body during yoga sessions. Those who think of yoga in the same way they think of other forms of exercise often overlook this mindfulness aspect, and if that sounds like you, I'd like to encourage you to consider bringing more attention to your breathing the next time you step onto the mat.

Mindful breathing is more than the physical act of inhaling and exhaling; it is the connection of our intention to that physical act. When we focus on our breath during a yoga class, we tell our mind to tune into the present moment and ask it to listen to what our body and mind are experiencing in that moment. Connecting our mind and body harmoniously allows us to cultivate a sense of inner peace and awareness that continues when we leave the mat.

In our fast-paced lives, we often neglect the power of our breath. As we go throughout our day, we may take shallow breaths or hold our breath unconsciously, which can lead to feelings of stress and tension in the body.

Modern science shows a link between our mental state and our breath. Our mental state can affect our breath; when we are excited or agitated, for instance, we tend to breathe faster. Conversely, our breath can affect our mental state. If we intentionally slow our breathing, we can calm our nervous system. This cycle of our mind and body affecting our breath and our breath affecting our mind and body means that breathing intentionally, and being aware of when we are not, can significantly impact our well-being.

Incorporating mindful breathing into our yoga practice lets us calm the mind and release tension or anxiety. In a difficult flow class, it is also a great teacher because it shows us we are capable of using our breath in this way, even in trying circumstances.

So, the next time you step onto your yoga mat, take a moment to close your eyes, inhale deeply, and exhale slowly. Notice the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves your body. Allow yourself to be fully present in each breath, letting go of distractions and worries. Embrace the transformative power of mindful breathing in your yoga practice, and witness its profound impact on both your mind and body.
